Astaroth

Information on the duke/duchess Astaroth. In some texts, Astaroth is a prince.

If you don't know anything about this demon, this website has excerpts from the popular canons associated with them.

Overview

Astaroth is... A tricky one. While the original depictions of Astaroth the demon have nothing to do with the ancient goddes Astarte, the lifting of the name has caused many people to syncretize the two. There's a lot of popular modern demonolators (such as S. Connolly) who report that Astaroth takes more feminine appearances and also prevides over love and war, similar to Astarte and her counterparts.

Personally, I've never experienced Astaroth as Astarte, however I have always experienced them as a feminine demon. I believe that the evolution of myths over time can either create or change the beings themselves depending on the being, and the "new" Astaroth most people are in contact with is the feminine version of Astaroth born from the syncretism. Either that, or Astaroth is aware that most people expect their feminine side, and so appears as such to the conjurer- demons can generally appear however they desire, after all

As always, this document is compiled of my personal experiences with whatever comes through when I call for "Astaroth", so take it with a grain of salt if you wish, or use this info if you're interested in this specific iteration of Astaroth.

Personal Experiences, Detailed

I would have to say that Astaroth is quite popular for a reson. Regardless of whether the entity the majority of people are contacting is the "real" Astaroth, she's known for being very responsive and understanding. However, she may be a bit too "lax" with people (though she is the demon of sloth/laziness, so take that as you will). Astaroth's great power and reach, even compared to some other demons, may be due to the fact that Astaroth is not only a Duke, but a Grand Duke, and part of the "evil trinity" along with Beelzebub and Lucifer.

First Impressions

Astaroth had a very warm and inviting presence to me. She appeared to me as regal-looking demoness with angel-like wings. Almost motherly in nature, with a very calculated grace. The sort of rehearsed-but-genuine friendliness that hosts of fancy parties used to use when showing people around and introducing them.

I'm not sure what the "noisome breath" thing is about, to be honest. I wonder if the toxic energies are more or less a form of self-defense towards people who only try to summon them by forcefully binding them with rituals. Astaroth always did come off as the type of person to be really nice, but when they get mean, they get mean.

Other

My experiences aren't uncommon, and many people report that Astaroth is very friendly (especially compared to some of the other high-ranking demons) and should be a relatively "safe" summon for a newbie, as long as proper respect is given. Depending on the circumstances, however, she can be very chatty and linger a bit in a playful manner- so it may be helpful to explicitly dismiss her when you would like her to leave your space.

Things that are Venusian in nature are recommended, as dukes are commonly associated with the planet Venus and all it is related to. However, I have had success with things under Jupiter, depending on what type of work you want to do with her. For elemental-related magic, I personally would lean towards air, earth, wood, or sometimes water, depending on the situation.

While green is standard in modern practice due to it being the color of dukes, I find that any color that is pleasant to the conjurer and reminds them of good vibes is apt to use. I personally lean towards green, purple, and pink in my associations with Astaroth, though I have also seen people use white or gold.

As long as you're being genuinely kind to her, I'm not sure if you can go wrong with giving things to Astaroth. She has accepted all sorts of offerings from me, even if I'm worried they might not be "enough". She seems to admire hard workers, and encourages taking breaks- this may be where the association with "sloth" comes from. If you cannot procure physical offerings, digital or astral ones will suffice, as well as devoting your self-care routines to her.

I've seen people ask for all sorts of things and get what they desire: Romantic love or new friends, help with securing loans or a job, self-love and self-care, artistic endeavors, resolve. It feels like she really can do it all, sometimes. Though she should, in theory, also be adept at malevolent magic- I have not invoked her for such, so I will not comment on it here. If one does invoke her for banes, I would suggest magic in self-defense, as opposed to you starting something just because you're mad.

Warning: Though I think some people can incorporate and balance whatever they want into their practice with enough skill, I have heard from multiple personal accounts that Astaroth's magic does not work well with Lilith's, and it is generally advised not to do rituals with both at the same time. I personally wouldn't know the intricacies of this (as I choose not to touch Lilith at all), but whatever iteration of Astaroth I was talking to didn't seem to like her too much when the subject was brought up. Take that as you will.

Identifying The Spirit

Astaroth has big "mom friend" vibes at times, though she's also flirty and personal. I've heard accounts from many others that she's not afriad to get very intimate, if the practitioner desires. As mentioned earlier, she has a warm, inviting, and enticing presence. It should be noted, however, that she is so calming that she can occasionally be too lax on you instead of telling you what you need to hear.

If you're looking to be in an extended relationship with her- regardless of if it's just work, or for veneration purposes- she does enjoy getting to know the practitioner. Things are always personal with her. If you're one to prefer to keep your distance and remain solely business, another demon would probably be preferrable. She seems... Lonely, almost, which might be why accounts describe her as being gloomy or looking hurt.

Another thing I will note, is that when summoning Astaroth, I can practically feel the details of her body. I can imagine things like the texture of her dress, how soft her wings are, and the ridges on her horns, as if I were remembering the sensation of touching them beforehand. I don't usually have this kind of feeling when talking to other spirits, and I wonder if it's on purpose due to her more intimate nature.

Ritual Results, etc

1

Astaroth is one of the first demons listed in the Ars Goetia that did not desire an official contract or pact for doing long-term work with me, though her help at the time was more for emotional support than physical things.

2

At my request, Astaroth has presented me with familiar spirits for my own personal emotional development. This happened pretty much instantly, and though this wasn't really a spell, I would consider the results to be a successful working.

3

Though she is the demon of sloth, I have asked her on multiple occasions to help lend me some of her magical power for when I was doing particularly intense astral work so that I could work harder/quicker on some rituals and such. She does provide.
